It seems these days that most of the issues surroundings our mountain bike community result in desperate cries to help save trails. It is refreshing to report that the City of Redmond Parks and Recreation Department is making some serious headway into the development of a new off-road bike park.

The goals of Redmond Bike Park are to provide local riders of all ages and skill leves with a facility designed and built specifically for developing riding skills in a safe and controlled environment

History

Since the 1990s, dirt jumps have been built by community members on city property outside of Hartman Park. The City convened community members to discuss the issues relating to this property and the predominant opinion was to find a way for the city to allow the use on the property. The City has been working to legitimize the existing use and formally design the jumps and park to adhere to current posted rules and best practices. The City also is working with community members to develop a more formal group of volunteers to build and maintain the park.

The City contracted Hilride Progression Development Group to assist in the evaluation of potential locations for a bike park facility in the Education Hill area. The current site was selected as the most feasible location and was approved by the Parks and Trails Commission and City Council as the permanent site for the bike park to be developed. The City is now working with Hilride, local riders and the community to design the bike park facility.

The final design is to be completed in late June with construction beginning late Summer. The construction of the project will require community members to volunteer their time to help build and maintain the bike park. The City will work with Hilride to provide a series of three volunteer builder trainings to teach volunteers how to build and maintain the park.

How You Can Help

Volunteer to Build

Donate materials (dirt, wood, fencing, plants)

Duthie Hill

We made huge progress in building the biggest and best mountain bike park in the state. Secured $150K in funding from King County for Phase 1 and built 4 miles of singletrack and 3/4 of the planned freeride trails. In 2010 we’ll complete 5 miles of XC and well over 1 mile of freeride trail

Hansen Ridge / South Fork Snoqualmie

Led by Justin Vander Pol, we built over 4miles of singletrack to create a beautiful out and back alpine ride with awesome views. In 2010 & beyond, we plan to add up to 10 miles.

Paradise Valley

Led by Brian Crowley, we built/maintained multiple miles of singletrack and built a countless new features. Many more are on the way in 2010.

Summit Ridge Freeride Park in Black Diamond

Led by Dennis Little, Peter Fisher from Black Diamond Bike, Glenn Glover and countless volunteers, the community came together to partner with the Real Life Church to build a new freeride park on the church property.

Tiger Mountain

Led by Brian Jones, we’ve continued to maintain miles of singletrack and created a much more sustainable trail and fun riding experience. We’re also partnering with the DNR to look at adding a connector trail between the lower Preston and NW Timber Trails.

Colonnade

Overhauled and improved the drainage and trail tread around the park and performed continued maintenance. We also hosted a number of events and demo days there.

Reiter Recreation Area

Worked with the DNR to create a comprehensive recreational plan for the area including restoration efforts over the coming years and followed by trail development as funding becomes available.

Education

We trained over 140 students and earned nearly $10k teaching new riders how to mountain bike. We also secured a $10k grant from REI to expand the program in 2010 adding professional training for instructors, classes and camps for youth, and much more!

Advocacy

Partnered with the WA DNR and statewide MTB community to draft recommendations to the DNR on how to manage and expand mountain bike opportunities on their land.

Secured a seat on the Colville National Forest Revision Roundtable to ensure the preservation of access for bikes to the Kettle Crest trail network.

Served on the Sustainable Recreation Work Group to draft and propose a final report to the legislature offering recommendations for sustainable funding and improved access for recreation on lands managed by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources.

Secured a seat on the Snoqualmie Unit Advisory Committee to actively participate in collaboratively making informed recommendations to the DNR on management of lands within the Snoqualmie unit.

And much more…

We Survived

We survived a tumultuous year where many business’s and nonprofits sank, reevaluated our principles and priorities, largely secured a new board, empowered a new Executive Director, and are stronger and more optimistic than ever that 2010 will be the best year yet. Just look at all of the new riding opportunities that we’re going to have next summer!

We were only able to accomplish this through your help! Thank you all for your continued support.

By: Jon Kennedy & Mike Westra

2009 was an exceptionally eventful year for many, especially for Evergreen and the mountain bike community. With decreased funding and an ambitious plan for the year, we found out quite soon that things were going to be tough. We’ve grown exponentially since receiving our nonprofit status back in 2003. With this growth came additional responsibilities and commitments and we’ve done our best to live up to these. We acknowledge the challenges that we face in many areas and thrive in our successes. As we brought 2009 to a close, I think that we all felt relieved to have made it through such a tough year. With new leadership it is with great excitement that we enter 2010. We have some great stuff planned for this year. From the grand opening of Duthie in March, to a major race in June, from expanding our education program to continuing to effectively advocate for the protection of and expansion of trails that we all hold dear… 2010 is looking pretty bright already.

So with that being said, here are 10 Things That Evergreen Did For You in 2009:
